Do not go here! I'm writing this as I'm walking away from this tourist trap. I walked in and asked in Chinese whether they still have dim sum. They said yes but when I sat down the cart ladies told me that they only have six items left and they won't make fresh dim sum for me in the kitchen. Too add insult to injury, I left after paying for a diet coke bc my husband was thirsty and they charged me a total of $5 for the tea pot they put on the table without telling me they charge for tea!!! $2 for tea we did not drink. Finally as I'm paying, the waitress tries to blame me for not understanding they can make dim sum in the kitchen for me. I told her I asked and they said no. Finally the manager admitted they couldn't but I don't understand the harassment.

Typical dim sum restaurant with the aggro dim sum ladies rolling around every couple minutes trying to push this or that on your table. Tried some kind of fish in a bell pepper (yum) shrimp ball (a-ok) and bao (where the F is the meat?!). Good news is that it was super cheap. Even better news is that I didn't get sick. Overall quality was just ok...However, I'd be willing to try another dim sum place over dining at Golden Dragon again.

This place is alright. It's your regular dim sum experience. Woman with cart rolls past, asks you if you want something, you usually say 'no, do you have..' and this happens the rest of the meal.God forbid you have to pay for your meal. Actually giving them reimbursement for feeding you is a task I would rather not revisit.Comes with the territory I suppose.

PRICE: A,B,C dishes are less than $2 a piece. This is a steal for Chinatown, which I feel is overpriced compared to the San Gabriel Valley.FOOD: The dim sum is good, not great. The only thing I think should be avoided at all costs are their dumplings. The meat is old-tasting and flavorless.SERVICE: The service is standard for what you'd find at a Chinese restaurant. The dim sum carts come out quickly, and they bring out your drinks without making any small talk. When it comes to paying, you actually pay at the register, even though the waiter will bring out your bill.PARKING: There is a free lot behind the restaurant, or you can park at the meter. With the free lot, the attendant bugs you for tips. Remember, if you do tip, tip after you get your car. We made the mistake of tipping once we parked and when we got our car after eating, they asked again for a tip! Um, no.ATMOSPHERE: Older Chinese decor. Things are faded from another time.NOTE: This place as of 2/10/13 has a B rating.OVERALL: If you can't make it over to the San Gabriel Valley and want dim sum on a budget, Golden Dragon is for you.

The porridge was tasteless, the red feng jao (chicken feet) was mushy, the white feng jao was old... I could on and on, because we ordered quite a few dishes. And this time, this unsatisfying lunch cost $120.Oh, and the waiter kept seeming in a rush whenever he came to pick up empty dishes or the teapot. And without failure, he spilled sauce and tea every single time. Twice, he even hit my aunt and didn't say anything. Seriously, man? He had no reason to rush like that and totally lack courtesy.

Ever since Empress Pavilion went down-hill I've had to put dim-sum outings on hold. That was the best dim sum establishment I knew of in LA.Today my friends and I went to the Renegade swap meet in Chinatown and we were getting hungry. We headed to Golden Dragon just across the street. The interior is impressive. Very old Chinese and classic 1950's vintage feel. It's also very large with movable walls to close off any area for private parties.Food: They had everything we wanted and we left feeling very satisfied, but they didn't have any shumai. Only at the end when we were eating our beng-dois (sesamie balls with red bean paste inside, more of a dessert) did they have shumai available and by then we were pretty stuffed. I like that the food was served in good timing, not too rushed and or too slow. Our waiters also were very prompt with our requests.Must get dishes: Pork spare ribs with squash makes a perfect dim sum addition. The beng-dois (sesamie balls with red bean paste inside) were so perfect, I've never had them that fresh and the dough was just right and crispy. My friend had it for the first time and I warned her that this is a rare occurrence. I will totally be back here next time I'm in a hankering for dim sum. It's near the metro station too, approx 8 minute walk!

Let me preface this review by saying I grew up south of San Francisco and asian food is my favorite thing ever. Dim Sum definitely holds a special place in my heart (stomach) so my standards are high.I usually drive out to Monterey Park or Alhambra to get Dim Sum, but I decided to try out a Chinatown spot out of curiosity. I food here was very okay. The first dish we were served was cold and it was only 10am, perhaps they are not very busy? The food seemed less flavorful and more greasy than other Dim Sum I have had, and the worst part for me was this strange feeling in my gut for the next 4 days. Not coming back because I don't want to feel sick after eating.

First time I came was for a birthday celebration in the back dining area. The decor isn't very appealing, and the carpeting probably hasn't been changed or cleaned since it opened. But the food was on point. Fresh, piping hot, and flavorful. Had the orange chicken, chow mein, beef fried rice, green beans (w/ no pork), and other items that I just can't remember right now. My absolute favorites were the green beans and the chow mein. The chow mein noodles tasted fresh and homemade. Yum!!! The other items were really good.I returned 2 days later with my parents, didn't know it was dim sum time during lunch. We ordered from the menu and every item I ordered (which was similar to what I had eaten at the birthday celebration) was not the same quality. Everything was oily and salty. So overall, this place is inconsistent. =(Parking is the lot next door. It's valet during the weekends. During the weekdays, you park and pay the attendant.

You know you frequent dim sum a little too often when the cart ladies start being nice to you! Haha. At least that's what my husband keeps saying.Golden Dragon is a restaurant almost lost in time. It's a bit further down Broadway and it looks forgotten...but do not be decieved. This places is normally packed full of people and the cart ladies are pushing hot tasty treats your way almost instantly. The ha gao and shu mai are always fresh and nearly perfect. The ha cheung (shrimp rice noodle) fresh and delicious. The pot stickers are plump and juicy. It's very rare for us to get something we dislike...and we are there nearly every other Saturday. Definitely our go-to dim sum downtown.

Well, for $1.80 each plate for items in the A, B, or C category is a steal during the weekday. However, after tasting a few dishes, I am not sure if it was a steal. We actually took the Gold Line to the Chinatown stop and walked a short distance to this restaurant. Even though I have lived in LA for most of my life, this place alluded me, and for good reason. There seems to be a parking lot directly behind this place, but whether you have to pay for it remains a mystery. I am guessing you probably don't have to pay, but you do have to validate your ticket to show proof that you went to this restaurant since we noticed an attendant watching the lot.Anyhow, we were seated by a hostess to our table. It was quite an interesting experience. There were these Chinese ladies that were pushing these food carts around the room. However, it seemed like they were pushing the same carts over and over. I actually wanted some vegetables dishes which they seem to not really offer here.We initially ordered shrimp wrapped in a big pasta exterior and lathered in soy sauce (Cherng Fun). This was pretty good. Then, things went south after that. We ordered some juicy pork dumplings. This was by far the worst juicy pork dumplings I have tasted. They were not juicy at all and the pork was nasty. Next, we ordered the traditional dim sum dishes such as chicken feet, har gow, and siu mai.I think chicken feet is an acquired taste, but I grew up on it so I thought this dish was decent. However, we noticed that the har gow (shrimp dumpling) was dry on the inside which is indicative that it has been cooked too long. The worst offender had to be the siu mai (shrimp, pork, and mushroom dumping). It was obviously overcooked as well making the food not so desirable. After that, I ordered a preserved egg and pork porridge. However, it was rather difficult to order as I had to ask a staff member since they didn't push that cart at all. I think you definitely need to know what to order since they don't necessarily push all the carts around the restaurant.Overall, some dishes were decent, and some were not. The staff seem to genuinely want to help you, if you can get their attention.

flew in from LAX and felt this aching need for some good Chinese so naturally I came down to Chinatown. I originally wanted to go to Empress Pavilion, but i saw a crowd of old chinese people coming out of this place so I assumed it was pretty authentic and decided to step out of my comfort zone and check it out.The good: the food is fresh. some dishes are cooked in the cart as you order it. I approve. Best of all, they didn't mess up chicken feet. I judge dim sum by the chicken feet. The bad: horrible service, but i did say it was authentic... they also don't have a milk tea cart like Empress does :(

Peking Duck-This is Chinatown, where much of the Mom and Pop places are about 6 tables in a garage. The Golden Dragon, recommended on the i-phone, is about the same size as Staples Center. I'm a nut for the Peking Duck. A variation of roast duck was made for the Emperor in the Yuan Dynasty; we're talking 1271 and Kublai Khan. The dish is presented in a royal 1330 recipe manual. That's like 100 years before Guttenberg was trying to set type. A little less than 700 years later, this place 'knows duck'. Take a 'heads up' on the portions. An order of 1/2 Peking Duck, one order egg rolls, one Chinese broccoli and one order steamed rice, could feed a party of 3 football stars and 4 hungry people.

So we came up to LA for the 113th Dragon Parade and what else should we do but have dim sum. We drove in early to Chinatown because parking would be at a premium during the parade. Luckily we parked about two blocks outside of the parade route. We walked around looking at the various booths that were set up in the tourist section, and you know the one...most films, that decide to film something in Chinatown, will have a scene in this area.Walking through the area we spotted Golden Dragon. How come in every Chinatown across the US, there's always at least one restaurant called "Golden Dragon?" It could be the Golden Dragon Cafe or the Happy Golden Dragon, or the Lucky Golden Dragon...LOL!It was crowded, but we didn't wait more than 5 minutes before being seated. There were all kinds of Chinese families here. Big, small...couples...and every once in a while, you spotted a white person...lol! Yeah, the partner kinda stood out in the sea of yellow. I really wished I knew how to speak Chinese. They had all the favorites: fun gao, shu mai, chasu bao, and Chinese broccoli. And of course my favorite, egg custard tarts, which I asked for 3 plates (3 on each). The service was efficient and most of the workers were friendly. Every once in a while there was that one that seemed annoyed. She probably didn't like the cart they stuck her with...LOL! Prices were pretty cheap. By the time we left, there was a huge crowd waiting to get in. We were glad we came early, and I suggest you do the same.

No star for me, but one star because it is required. The service really sucks at this place and the dim sum is not all great. I been here like three times and it seems as if the service gets worse every time. I'm not coming back to this place because they pretty much ignore your patron. I suggest going to Empress Palace or CBS.My family and I got there with a party of eight. There were no other parties waiting for a table. The hostess said we had to wait 20 mins for a large table to become available. They had like 4 four large tables available! The hostess asks if we want to have two square tables, and of course we say yes, but then when we get at the table, she wants us to sit at separate tables from each other! We asked about the other bigger tables and they said they were broken, or they just didn't understand us as the hostess and waiter was arguing to each other in Chinese. So they sat us way in the back, which hardly any of the dim sum carts came by. One of the men floor managers was accommodating, only because my dad told him he was not coming there anymore. It was a really unpleasant way to start a family get together.Oh and the lady owner, which I believe is the only one who handles the register, is so rude! I bought my niece a lottery scratcher from the machine and I let her scratch the ticket and she won a little something. I ask the lady owner if I could cash the ticket and she tells me that I had to go to the other counter on the other side of the waiting area because that's the lotto register to cash it, but she didn't have time and she was too busy! A few years back, my husband and I drove his mother out to LA to visit Auntie and she showed us around and we ended up eating dim sum here. It was so good, a few months later, with nothing to do, my husband and I found ourselves driving to LA for the day, and again had some really good dim sum.So today, we were in LA for a funeral and the family had made reservations for Golden Dragon, we weren't sure if it would be dim sum but knew it would be good. They family had pre selected a seven course meal. Each dish topped the last and once again, we found ourselves enjoying some good Chinese food. To us, the drive is part of the experience, and it's always good to go, so this place will remain a favorite while in the LA area.

Maybe its because I was super hungry, but I really enjoyed a lot of the dim sum here. More than usual, but then again I have to remind you I was super hungry so my gauge might have been off.I liked their chicken buns, the bbq pork was tasty, the stuffed eggplant, the pan fried dumplings, ooh I also liked their mango custard jello dessert. Check my pics cause I don't remember everything. Plus there was this really cute boy sitting near me and I couldn't concentrate that well. :) cause i was molesting him with my eyes...There were only a few things I thought were a miss, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Walking on a SundayFirst impressions "man it was packed"Well coming in as a group who volunteered for the annual firecracker run we were a bit hungryFirst having egg soup with corn and chicken a little bland but done well, the next thing that we had was a bun or bao in Chinese small but good, and the main dishes were fried pork chops, sweet and sour pork, steam veggies, fried rice, chow meinnothing to really to point out as most of it was done well in terms of group portions it was a little less than many other places I've been. Another thing I had to consider was the chow mein was considerably oily more than chow mein you can get at most Chinese fast food placesi hear dim sum is pretty good but i'm not sure anyways i would go back as they were quite quick with service and it was adequate in space to move around

I came here for lunch on a Thursday and was surprised to see a lot of people in here. Well, except, all of the people there were old Chinese grannies and grandpas. The service here is alright. I expected to see a lot more women carrying around the carts but there were only a few doing that. OH and the women here do understand English, so that's definitely a plus.As for the food, I tried the har gow, siu mai, pork buns, and more random things that I don't know the names of..I guess their quality wasn't that great because the skin of the dim sum got stuck on the metal containers it was served in. It was pretty rare to get a piece of dim sum out perfectly without damaging the shape of it. I was also disappointed at how some of the dishes weren't steaming hot and was only luke warm. If I was asked whether I would come here again, my answer would be a No.

This is currently my favorite DIM SUM place in Chinatown. I think I like this place because all the items seem fresh out of the kitchen. They're piping hot! (Even the desserts!) I like this place so much that I've been here like every other week since discovering it.TIPS:1) Come on weekdays. A,B,C items = $1.85. I think A is normally like $2.50 and C is like $4.50.2) It's DIM SUM so unless you're Chinese, there's a lot of experimenting. If you're n00b, this is what you should get:-Shu-mai (pork, shrimp, mushroom dumpling)-Har-gow (shrimp dumpling with rice skin)-Leek and Shrimp dumpling-Seafood Eggroll (fried goodness with seafood inside, comes with mayonnaise)-Shrimp Ball (fried ball with shrimp filling)-Egg Tart (egg custard pie)-Fried Sesame Ball (mochi with red bean inside and covered with sesame seeds).3) I do recommend getting House Fried Rice (with no pork) or the House Chow Mein Hong Kong style if you are with a large group.4) Do not get the Lobster special. The only negative thing I have to say is that it's hard to communicate with the ladies pushing the carts. I don't speak Chinese. Plus I don't know what half the items are called! I kind of have to open all the lids to look and point. It's a lot of gesturing.. People complain about the decor and service, but what do you expect? It's DIM SUM. Get over it. This isn't 5 star dining.I highly recommend coming here on the weekdays for a quick, delicious, and cheap lunch.

I just got back from dinner at Golden Dragon Restaurant, and had to warn everyone before they plan on eating there. The first warning was the grade 'B' from the health inspector. I realize that sometimes the grades depend on the inspector's mood, so me and my girlfriend decided to give them a chance to redeem their selves. We started with the dinner for two, which included for the appetizers: soup, BBQ rib, two fried shrimp, two fried egg rolls. The shrimp ball soup was very good. The BBQ rib was edible, though very salty. The fried shrimp were just batter; I don't think there was even a shrimp in it. The egg rolls were oozing oil, so I passed on it. We also ordered a 8 piece side of shumai, a steamed pork dumpling. I ate 1/2 of one, my girlfriend nibbled on another. They tasted as though the pork was spoiled, and that they had been made 3 days ago. The entree consisted of Lemon chicken, fried rice, and shrimp in lobster sauce. The lemon chicken was overcooked; the ...? More ?

I'm giving this restaurant a 4 star rating because the quality of the dim sum was very good and the price was very reasonable. I ate and drank at a table for 4 and we ate until we were full for only $32 before tip (yes, in April 2009). I ate at another "fancier" place a few days earlier in Monterrey Park with the same people and the bill came out to over $90 before tip!!!! Disregarding the price, most of the food at the fancier place was certainly not better. Regarding the price Golden Dragon wins hands down. The service at Golden Dragon was a bit slow, otherwise I may have given this place 5 stars. I was walking around on Broadway going in and out of restaurants looking for Dim Sum, and this one was recommended by a chef at another non-dim sum restaurant on Broadway. I went on a Wednesday morning around 10:00am and the clientele was primarily senior citizen Chinese. The place itself is huge, and not really that fancy, but the food stands out as this place's greatest ...? More ?
